Royal Oak

The Royal Oak pub which was in Church Street, almost opposite the junction with Priory Road. It was pulled down in the 1960s but is still remembered by older Dunstablians. Members of the Dunstable and District Local History Society have been recalling in their newsletter that a publican there, John Brown, was one of the first people in town to install a brand-new invention in his house - a wireless. Mr Brown is also remembered for having his name frosted on the pub's glasses so customers would not steal them! The huge posters on the side of the pub when this photo was taken were advertising a Grand Concert at the Grand Theatre, Luton, and concerts and dances at the Plait Hall. Unfortunately, neither the posters nor the photograph bear a date.
